Understanding federal patent funding

In Switzerland, the Confederation actively supports continuing education through a system of funding for people preparing for a federal diploma. This scheme aims to encourage the development of professional skills by reimbursing part of the costs incurred for preparatory courses.
In practical terms, you pay the training costs in advance, and are reimbursed once you have passed the federal examination.

⬇️ For a better understanding of how the system works, you can watch this official explanatory video ⬇️

Conditions of eligibility

To qualify for this funding, certain conditions must be met:

  • Preparatory training for a recognised federal certificate
  • Pay training costs personally
  • Take the federal examination (the result does not affect entitlement to reimbursement)
  • Reside in Switzerland or meet the criteria laid down by the Swiss Confederation

This system is accessible regardless of your age, professional status or income.

Amount of reimbursement and costs covered

The Confederation will reimburse up to 50 % training costs, with a defined ceiling.
The costs taken into account include :

  • The cost of preparatory courses
  • Certain ancillary costs directly linked to the course

Federal examination fees are not generally included in this scheme.

Steps to obtain financing

The process is simple and structured:

  1. You are enrolling on a recognised preparatory course
  2. You pay the training costs
  3. You register for and sit the federal examination
  4. You submit your claim for reimbursement to the competent authorities
  5. You receive the grant directly into your account

Terms and conditions of grant payment

Reimbursement will only be made once you have taken part in the federal examination.
Once your application has been validated, the Confederation will pay the grant directly into your bank account. Processing times may vary from period to period, but are generally quick if your application is complete.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

To maximise your chances of obtaining a refund :

  • Keep all your supporting documents (invoices, certificates, proof of payment)
  • Check that the course you are taking is recognised
  • Anticipate your registration to the federal examination
  • Prepare your file upstream to avoid delays

Good organisation is the key to taking full advantage of this scheme and securing your investment in training.

Certain situations require special attention:

  • If your employer pays for all or part of the training
  • If you are following several courses at the same time
  • If you do not sit the federal examination

In such cases, your right to reimbursement may be affected. It is therefore essential to check the conditions carefully beforehand.

In the canton of Vaud, funding is based on a combination of two levels:

  • the Federal reimbursement (SEFRI) after the exam
  • from additional cantonal aid, under certain conditions

The cantonal scheme can supplement federal funding to support people in employment in the canton who finance their own training. In some cases, part of the training and/or examination fees may be covered.

In Geneva, the principle remains the same: the main funding comes from the Confederation via SEFRI.

In addition, people living or working in the canton can, under certain conditions, benefit from specific assistance such as cantonal continuing education schemes. These grants are generally awarded on the basis of income, professional situation and the type of training taken.

Yes, in many cases, aid can be accumulated, including :

  • federal funding (SEFRI)
  • cantonal grants (Vaud or Geneva)
  • employer participation
  • sectoral or joint funds

However, this accumulation is subject to certain restrictions:
the total amount of aid may not exceed the actual cost of the training.

It is therefore essential to plan ahead to maximise the funding available, while complying with the rules on coordination between schemes.
