The art of franchising: insights from a network development expert
Interview with Bruno Chrisostome

Could you briefly tell us about your career path and how you came to advise franchise networks?
My career in the franchise industry has been both comprehensive and diverse. I first spent seven years as a franchisee, which gave me an understanding of the daily challenges of this position. I then moved on to become a network coordinator, then Director of Development, and finally Chief Operating Officer of a brand specialising in home-based childcare.
Advising franchise networks and project leaders was the natural next step in my career. That is why I took over as Director of Lem'On Développement, a firm that assists network leaders in recruiting franchisees.
Our expertise enables us to offer customised solutions for presenting qualified candidates to brands such as France Hygiène Ventilation and Stores de France. Our approach is based on three essential pillars:
- An extensive talent network that enables us to identify profiles perfectly suited to the specific needs of franchisors.
- A particularly rigorous selection process ensuring that each candidate meets the most demanding criteria in terms of skills and cultural fit.
- Tailor-made support covering every stage, from precisely defining the desired profile to the candidate's full integration.
What are the most common challenges franchisees face in their development, and what management strategies do you recommend to overcome them?
The main challenge for franchisees lies in their ability to overcome unforeseen obstacles, maintain control in unexpected situations, and develop a forward-looking vision of the market.
The key to this success is undoubtedly the team. I have learnt that no lasting success can be achieved alone – success is always the result of a well-orchestrated collective effort.
How do you balance the need to maintain network consistency while allowing franchisees to tailor their approach to their local market?
This crucial issue is resolved in two stages. First, through a meticulous pre-selection process of future franchisees, with particular emphasis on assessing their ability to align themselves with the franchisor's overall strategy while remaining agile in response to the specific characteristics of their local market.
Next, through continuous and solid support from the franchisor, who must both provide valuable advice and ensure compliance with the fundamental concept of the franchise.
What do you consider to be the most important negotiation skills for success as a franchisee today?
To excel as a franchisee today, the most valuable negotiation skills are:
- In-depth knowledge of the target market
- A solid understanding of the regulatory and legal framework
- A detailed analysis of the competition and its strategies
How do you structure your communication with the entire network to ensure the effective transmission of good management practices?
To ensure optimal transmission of best management practices, we structure communication through several complementary channels:
- Thematic workshops specifically designed to address the issues encountered
- Round tables facilitating direct dialogue between franchisors and franchisees
- Occasional intervention by specialist firms on specific topics
- Continuing education programmes to maintain excellence
- Digital tools such as websites and extranets dedicated to information sharing
What advice would you give to our learners who would like to develop a franchise or take on a management position in a franchise network?
For those considering developing a franchise or taking on a management position within a network, I highly recommend:
- Honestly assess your ability to become a business leader or to integrate into a network leadership structure.
- Conduct a thorough skills assessment to identify the sector of activity that best suits you.
- To take the time necessary to study each project thoroughly
- Seek information from recognised organisations such as the French Franchise Federation (FFF) or the IREF.
- Actively participate in trade fairs specialising in franchising to immerse yourself in this ecosystem.
