What a headhunter looks for first in your LinkedIn profile

Article written by Laurence Biondi Marcovecchio

Do you think a headhunter will take the time to read your LinkedIn profile in detail? Think again.

He scans. He targets. He looks for clear and quick positive signals.

In a matter of seconds, they form an opinion: “I'll look into this profile” or “I'll move on to the next one.” Here's what they look at first and what you can optimise today.

1. Profile photo: first glance, first impression

Your photograph is the first thing people see. It should convey a professional, direct and reassuring image.

The criteria for a good photograph:

– A neutral or understated background,

– A slight smile,

– A frank look,

– Good image quality (not blurry, not cropped or overly holiday-oriented).

2. The title under your name: be specific

This is one of the most strategic elements of the profile.

Avoid: “Actively seeking employment” or “Available immediately”.

Preferably, clearly state your job title or speciality (e.g. Recruitment Officer | International Mobility).

3. The banner: a discreet but powerful asset

Few users customise it, yet a professional banner related to your sector immediately provides context and enhances your profile.

4. The summary (“Info”): short, impactful, human

The recruiter wants to understand who you are, what you can do and what value you can add. Use action verbs, be specific (areas of expertise, achievements, figures if possible), and remain authentic.

5. Experience: results, not just a list of positions

A list of positions held is no longer sufficient.

Mention your achievements: process improvement, team management, project management, achievement of objectives, etc.

6. Skills: aligned and validated

Your “Skills” section should be consistent with your target role. Highlight your key skills and have them validated by your contacts. For your information, you can add up to 100 skills to your profile.

7. The network: an active profile is a credible profile

A good network starts with 300 relevant connections in your industry. Fewer than 50 connections may give the impression of an inactive profile.

8. Publications: your professional voice

Share ideas, industry news, and original posts. Avoid mistakes and unnecessary content.

9. Location: be strategic

Clearly indicate the Swiss city you are targeting. This is essential to appear in the recruiter's searches.

10. Recommendations: a real bonus

A few well-written testimonials will boost your credibility. They show that other professionals recognise your skills and added value.

11. Carry out the requested verification on LinkedIn

Verifying your LinkedIn profile (using your ID or professional email address) allows you to obtain a badge, displayed right next to your first and last name.  This official sign of authenticity boosts your profile's credibility, reassures recruiters, and makes you stand out in search results. It's a simple way to inspire confidence while increasing your visibility on the platform. Think about it: this small verification can make a big difference.

In summary

A headhunter is looking for a professional who is well-positioned, credible and active. Your LinkedIn profile, a true professional showcase, should reflect your value, make people want to contact you and inspire confidence. Clear, polished and up to date, it is not just a simple online CV, but a strategic tool in its own right: showcase it and use it to leverage opportunities.
