Job hunting: the false friend of “I'm open to anything”

Interview with Laurence Marcovecchio

Cross-border employment advisor, corporate relations officer and lecturer

“I'm open to anything.”

A phrase that can close doors for you.

“I'm open to anything. I take whatever comes my way.”.

When looking for a job, you want to broaden your scope. That makes sense. But this phrase can backfire on you!

It creates an impression of vagueness. It does not reassure recruiters or personnel advisers.

A candidate who is too generalist may give the impression of someone who is:

👉🏼 No plans.
👉🏼 Without direction.
👉🏼 Without a clear position.

What are employers looking for?

People in positions of influence, with several realistic and coherent options.

What should one say?

✅ “I am seeking a position in [sector/role], but I am also considering similar opportunities as a Plan B.”

✅“I have experience in [X] and am transitioning to [Y], while remaining open to roles where my skills would be useful.”

That is:
👉🏼 Nuanced.
👉🏼 Clear.
👉🏼 Structured.

Open doors, yes... But not to the point of erasing your profile.
