Recruitment interviews: how to stay on track when dealing with several interviewers

Interview with Laurence Marcovecchio

Cross-border employment advisor, corporate relations officer and lecturer

Have you ever found yourself alone in front of a panel made up of a recruiter, a future manager, sometimes even an HR manager and a team member? It's not easy to concentrate when there are so many eyes on you and so many questions coming from all sides.

Yet this type of interview is becoming increasingly common. Companies want to hear different points of view before making a decision.

The good news? It's a great opportunity for you to show who you really are and show off your people skills.

Here are a few keys to turning this moment into a success:

  1. Understand each other's expectations

  • The HR makes sure you fit in with the company's culture and values.
  • The manager checks your technical skills and your potential for development.
  • The associate (if he/she is present) will assess whether you can easily integrate into the team.

Anticipate these angles and prepare your answers accordingly.

  1. Talk to everyone

Even if only one person asks you a question, make sure you look at the others too. This shows that you know how to include everyone and manage a group.

  1. Show your adaptability

Everyone has their own personality and way of expressing themselves. By varying your tone or examples slightly, you can show that you know how to adjust your communication to suit your audience.

  1. Control your pace

A jury may give the impression that they are going fast or «testing you». Breathe, take a few seconds to think before you answer. This shows your ability to handle the pressure.

  1. Stay consistent

Even if the questions come from different people, your answers should always be consistent with your background and motivations. This consistency inspires confidence and credibility.

Bonus tip Think of this interview not as an exam, but as a professional meeting. You're already demonstrating a valuable skill: knowing how to interact with several profiles at once.

In short, an interview with several interviewers is not a trap, but an opportunity. It's an opportunity to prove that you are comfortable communicating, capable of adapting and convincing different decision-makers.
